How do you determine the proper water treatment system for your coffee shop?
- The first step is to test your water. Then try to estimate the water usage for your equipment including your coffee brewer, espresso machine, ice maker and drinking water facet if you have one.
- Knowing the hardness of the water and the projected usage will determine what filtration system is needed to protect your equipment.
- For minimal hard water of no more than 7 grains of hardness, a two filter system including one for taste, order, chlorine removal, and a second one that will meter a scale inhibitor based on the quantity of water that passes through the system will be placed.
- For harder water of more then 7 grains, in addition the the above filter system, a “water Softener” system is needed. The type of water softener system placed will again be based on how hard your water is and the volume of water to be used. There are several softener filter options which can range from a small under-counter cartridge to a full water softener system being installed in the building.
- If your water is extremely hard, 25 grains or harder, the two above systems will be installed and it is recommended that a “Reverse Osmosis” system be installed to protect your equipment. This system will usually be installed “after” the water softener system.
If your water has any chance of having particulates, it might also be necessary to install a “pre-filter” ahead of ALL of the other filter systems installed. This can be a preventitive measure of insuring that your other filters will not get plugged, which can shorten the life of those more expensive and improtant filter and softener systems.
Whatever system is recommended and installed in your cafe, it is HIGHLY recommended and required by most equipment manufactures, that these filters be changed at a MINIMUM interval of 6 months. This is very very important if you need warranty work in the future because a manufacture will require to see the records of your water filter system and how it has been maintained.
