A group of scientists at the University of California just completed a 10 year study comparing the flavonoid levels in conventionally and organic grown tomatoes and found twice the flavonoids in the organic variety. Flavonoids, also called Bioflavonoids, are elements of plants that have been shown to provide protection against heart disease, cancer and dementia. All things that I know I’d like to avoid. The study also showed that sustainably grown cover crops gradually increase the organic matter and fertility of their soil so farmers don’t need to use as much compost to keep nitrogen levels high. Despite much of the negative publicity the super stores CEO’s push on our media bashing organics we all know the real truth. Keep buying organic, keep buying local, keep buying green and blue for a better world today and tomorrow.

As the end of the year approaches us and we enter the Holiday season, I was caught in a moment of deep thought. I was thinking about Thanksgiving and started to ponder what I am thankful for, better still, do I ever stop and take a moment to think or ponder about what I am thankful for?
In that moment, I realized that I have much to be thankful for and decided to write down some of these things. In doing so, I thought that I would like to share some of these things with you all, so I hope that you don’t mind. I also hope that this will inspire you to also take a moment to reflect on what you have to be thankful for, maybe even write them down and share them with others.

I can’t think of anything a hunter would rather do after climbing out of his deer stand than heading over to the Brew Moon in Eagle River and enjoying a nice afternoon tea. Hey, even if you’re not a hunter who doesn’t love tea and pastry…including Pumpkin Gelato in a delicous chocolate shell. Just take a look at Sue’s Afternoon Tea Pastry plate pictured here! Afternoon Tea is another great way to attract alternative business to your shop and Sue has done a beautiful job making her our Cafe of the Month. Stop by soon for a great cup of coffee, an afternoon tea or a scoop of fresh Gelato.

Cheers, David
