Hi Everyone.
It is part of my daily mission at Upper Midwest Gourmet to find ways to:
a: Be a greener company (improve our environmental impact on the earth)
b: Lower operating costs to help offset price increases
c: Improve quality of life for staff
I came across an article in this weekends Minneapolis Star and Tribune that addresses all of these issues through the conversion to a 4 day work week. If you paste the following link into your browser you can read about how this change can work to benefit a company like ours and in turn help us to benefit your company as well. The link:
http://www.startribune.com/local/28333109.html
I’m looking for feedback from all our customers as to what you would think of this change? We would adjust our hours to be open Monday – Thursday from 7:30 am to 5 pm (currently M-F 9am-4pm). We would be consolidating the Tuesday and Friday Van routes to both take place on Tuesday. This should save us money on: fuel, labor and utilities while giving our staff the ability to enjoy more time with their families on the weekend. While price increases are still unavoidable, this may be able to help offset the significance of some of the increases we’re seeing on the horizon.
If there is no uproar from our customers I’d consider implementing this change, on a trial basis, some time in October? If it turned out that it was causing customers problems and we did not see any benefits to the change we could always change back to our traditional 5 day work week.
I’d really appreciate any feedback you may have so I have set up an online poll. Please take a moment to check whether you’d be for or against this change.
Thanks in advance for your business, all of us here at Upper Midwest Gourmet appreciate it very much.
Cheers,
David Chall

Alternative titles for this entry could be Coffee fan realizes dream! or Sales rep now selling something he loves! For the past 9 years I have been a part of growing a small frozen pizza company from a small local player (Appleton, WI) to a strong regional player (WI, IL the UP). This was challenging and satisfying work but I was ready for a change.
I have for a longtime been a fan of the espresso/coffee house industry. My first Cappuccino experience was at the Ovens of Brittany restaurants in Madison, WI. in the early 80s. The people in my life know of my love of coffee and many have told me that I should be working in the industry, and now happily I am. This came about because I learned of UMG at Backroads Coffee in Hayward, WI. (By the way, very nice people, who took time when busy, to answer this customers coffee questions). I am so pleased to be a part of the team at UMG where my responsibilities will be to grow our business in IL and eastern IA. The blend of products, expertise and committed people at this company will be a joy to share with new customers.
If you would like to contact me my cell # is 612-432-8119 , email tim@uppermidwestgoumet.net.

Most of us in the industry have read stories and seen pictures of coffee plantations and their processing plants. However, many have never been able to visit personally or have seen live footage. Here is a great link to a video shot in Brazil at the Fazenda Ipanema plantation. Pay particular attention to the part on Full natural vs natural processing of their delicious coffee beans. After watching the video, give us a call and we’ll tell you about some of the great Natural Processed Fair Trade Organic coffees we can roast for you everyday.

7-Eleven, the national “quick-stop” chain, has implemented an interesting political tool to their service. According to a recent New York Times article, those who enjoy 7-Eleven coffee will be asked to choose a cup to correspond to their favored presidential candidate: Obama or McCain.

7-election.com says it all. The website shows an up-to-date tally of those states lucky enough to have a 7-Eleven residing within it.
Compromised coffee? To our standards, yeah. Far-fetched marketing campaign? Not quite; 7-election.com boasts that during the 2004 election, they predicted the national results to the exact percentage. Just something to keep you occupied…

Zoomski’s Coffee Shop located in Little Falls, MN does the independant cafe industry proud!
The staff and owner of Zoomski’s take immense pride in their coffee and espresso drinks. This is most evident by their attention to only serving Fair Trade Organic coffee and espresso, but by also being Golden Cup Certified!
Not only do they make great beverages, but their food is prepared with the same attention to detail and top-notch quality. They are a drive-through, but also have seating for enjoying food and drink inside the cafe.
They do a very nice job with their lunch catering and also host a small Farmer’s Market every Wednesday and Saturday on their property.
Here are some pictures from the cafe, of some of their amazing delicacies, and their Farmer’s Market.

Wednesday, Jesse decided to round out a busy day at Upper Midwest Gourmet by specially roasting some Jamaican Blue Mountain and putting a freshly roasted pot in the showroom for all to enjoy. I was on my way out the door but I filled up my travel mug, because I just could not pass up a chance taste of such a highly acclaimed and desired coffee. Jamaica, with its ideal growing conditions, has provided the coffee community with one of the most expensive and highly sought after coffees in the world. Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee is a globally protected certification mark meaning that only coffee certified by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica can be labeled as such. What I’m trying to tell you is…
Jamaican Blue Mountain is the Holy Grail of coffees.

Cut to, my after work stop, retrieving the next Harry Potter book from Barnes and Noble’s used book section. As usual, I can’t wait to start reading, so I choose to have a seat and sip on my newly acquired cup of Jamaican in the store’s cafe, which just so happens to be a Starbucks.
I hope you appreciate the irony as much as I did.
