Toblerone, Amaretti Cookies, Bruschetta and Cannolis

Upper Midwest will have a few new items in stock soon.  The first is Mini single serving Swiss Toblerone Chocolates.  The same luscious candy you’ve seen all over Europe but now in a mini single serving size.  The bars still have the distinctive triangle shape and comes in a triangular counter top server.  You’re customers will love this high image, exclusive product.

Also coming soon will be the Lazzaroni family Amaretti di Saronno Cookies, Cannolis and Bruschetta, all imported from Italy.  Amaretti di Saronno cookies go perfect with coffee, fine wine and after dinner liqueurs. According to legend, almost three centuries ago, the Cardinal of Milan unexpectedly visited the town of Saronno in Italy. To honor him, two young lovers, Giuseppe and Osolina, quickly baked up a mixture of sugar, apricot kernels, and egg whites, creating crisp, airy cookies with an unusual bittersweet flavor which they wrapped in pairs to symbolize their love. The Cardinal was delighted and blessed the young couple, who married and lived happily ever after. Since 1718 this ancient and secret recipe has been preserved by the Lazzaroni family. Unwrap a legend and begin your own happy ending. Eat them plain, or try them crumbled over almost any dessert.  You can get really adventurous by making a tiramisu cake with the cookies.  We’ll stock them in bulk and possibly in gift tins and gift boxes depending on demand.  Lazzaroni also offers small bags of bruschetta and biscotti and small tins of Hazelnut and Chocolate cream filled cannoli sticks.  All are great for snaking and gift giving.  Please let your salesperson know which products you have interest in so we can get sufficient supplies.

              “I am a caterer and cooking instructor and find Amaretti di Soronno cookies to be absolutely incomparable to other similar products on the market. I’ve used them in a multitude of recipes ranging from crumbling them on top of fresh berries or peaches with sweetened mascarpone for dessert to using them as part of a filling in butternut squash ravioli. It’s Time for Coffee! Calhoun Coffee Fest 2008!

Please join us (Flamenco Organic Coffee Company) on November 22nd, 2008 from 10 a.m. to 2 pm for the 19th Annual Coffee Festival at Calhoun Square in Minneapolis, MN.

For only $9, coffee aficionados receive a specially designed 19th annual Coffee Festival mug and access to vendors—samples include a large variety of coffee and teas, breads and sweet desserts, and a number of other tasty surprises. Admission will also give you access to various educational seminars as well as some fun entertainment options. In addition to the unique entertainment and the tasty treats and drinks, there will be prize drawings and special offers from participating vendors.

Proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Heartland, with a one day goal of feeding 20,000 people.

For easy parking on the day of Coffee Fest, park in the Sons of Norway parking lot (3016 Holmes Ave S), then catch a shuttle to Calhoun Square. This shuttle will run continuously from 9am to 4pm on November 22nd. The shuttle is free, while the Sons of Norway Parking is just $2 during the event. The Calhoun Square parking ramp is open to customers, with valet parking only, at standard parking rates.

Seasonal Recipes with flair

Looking for some fun ideas for the Holidays?  Having trouble coming up with good ideas?  Give your salesman a call and we can help you come up with some great recipes.  Remember, give your drinks names with flair.  Would you rather buy a Cinnamon Pecan Latté or a Sticky Bun Latté?  A White Chocolate Mocha or a Polar Bear Latté?  Spice up the names and watch the syrup sales flow! Adding Hot to Pumpkin Pie is simple but affective.  Add Toasted to your Gingerbread, Hazelnut, Almond and Marshmallow menus. 

Don’t forget to garnish your drinks!  Whipped Cream, shaved chocolate, ice Cream/donut sprinkles, fresh spices all go a long way when presenting the drink to your enamored customer.  If you make your own whip cream (why wouldn’t you), give it a shot of flavor matching some of your featured drinks.  We stock both White and Semi-Sweet Dobla Chocolate Curls (pictured below) for the ultimate garnish……also great on any of your favorite deserts!

New Winter Hours & 4 day Work Week

Hello Beanheads!

I posted a link to an article in the Minneapolis Star & Tribune a few months back about Upper Midwest Gourmet switching to a 4 day work week.  For those of you who didn’t see it, here it is again:

You can also scroll down the blog to the original post.  Along with the article we did a poll on what you all would think about UMG adopting such a policy.  There has been overwhelming support for the idea.  I was very surprised how many people called us to tell us stories of a place they used to work, or where a spouse, friend or relative works that have these plans and how well it has worked out.  In my original post I listed all the reasons I had for looking at this plan but I am still worried about making such a switch permanent.  As a result, we’ve decided to give it a go on a trial basis and adopting the 4 day work week for our Winter hours.  Beginning December 1st, our office hours will change to longer days: 8 am – 5:00 pm and a 4 day work week: Monday – Thursday.  Depending on how it goes, it may stay as just a Winter hour plan, it may become a permanent plan, or I may scrap it all together and go back to our original office hours.  Your feedback will determine how it all goes.   For those of you who place your orders with Spee Dee delivery, if you ordered on Friday in the past and received your orders on Monday, they will now come on Tuesday.  For those of you who are on our local Friday route delivery day, you new delivery day will be Tuesday, so please place your orders by Mondays.

Both schools are strong supporters of Flamenco Organic’s mission of only serving Fair Trade and Organic coffee. Coffee has historically been one of the world’s most exploitative industries. Fair Trade helps to insure the quality of life for workers and helps to prevent cost-cutting practices that hurt the quality of coffee. Coffee, which is the world’s second largest traded food commodity, is also one of the most unregulated and chemically treated. That is why Organic and Fair Trade coffee is SO important to all of us.

UMG, Flamenco, UST, and Concordia also strive for sustainability. That means that we are all working to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We do this by only selling and using Eco-conscious supplies, like cups, napkins, etc.

Some examples of our sustainability are:

UMG has solar panels on our facility which help to power the roasting equipment of the Flamenco Organic Coffee Co. UST has switched to corn-oil based cold cups and 100% recyclable napkins on campus. Concordia, Moorhead has focused on five themes: food, water, waste, energy, and transportation and are working as a WHOLE campus to make serious “green” change.

Dealing with WI-FI Moochers

This can be a tuff subject to deal with for most cafes.

I ran accross this aritcle today with what I think is an excellent idea. However, as I was taught to say during my military stint; “I can neither deny nor confirm my endorsement of this idea.”

I do think this topic should be addressed as you all know too well, so think deep and hard about addressing the issue and hopefully this article will inspire some ideas.
